What Is a Gum Infection?

Gum infections occur when harmful bacteria penetrate the gum tissue, leading to inflammation, pain, swelling, and, if left untreated, destruction of the bone and structures that support the teeth. Infections can range from localized gum abscesses to widespread periodontal disease. Regardless of severity, prompt and effective treatment is essential to prevent the infection from spreading and causing permanent damage.

Signs of a Gum Infection

A gum infection can come on quickly, even when gum disease has been building silently for years. Swelling, pain and pus mean bacteria are trapped and need to be removed.

  • A swollen, shiny or tender area on the gum
  • Pus or a pimple on the gum
  • A bad taste or smell
  • A tooth that feels raised or loose
  • Pain when chewing, sometimes with fever or swollen glands

Gum Infection Treatment at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, gum infections are treated by Dr. Geoffrey Rubinshtein, a board-certified periodontist who specializes in diagnosing and managing infections of the periodontal tissues. Dr. Geoffrey begins with a comprehensive evaluation to determine the source, extent, and severity of the infection. Treatment may include drainage of an abscess, thorough debridement of the infected area, antimicrobial therapy, and, in more advanced cases, surgical intervention to eliminate deep-seated infection and promote healing.

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. Exam and X-ray. We locate the source and check for bone loss.
  2. Drainage. The infection is drained and the pocket is cleaned under local anesthesia.
  3. Irrigation. The area is flushed with an antibacterial solution.
  4. Medication. Antibiotics are prescribed when the infection is spreading or you are unwell.
  5. Follow-up. The underlying gum disease is assessed and treated once the area has settled.

Treating the Underlying Cause

In many cases, gum infections are a manifestation of underlying periodontal disease that has been progressing without symptoms. Once the acute infection is resolved, Dr. Geoffrey develops a long-term treatment plan that may include scaling and root planing to address the disease at its source and periodontal maintenance to prevent recurrence. For patients whose infection involves significant tissue destruction, regenerative procedures such as bone grafting may be necessary to restore what has been lost.

Cost and Insurance

The fee for periodontal treatment depends on how much of the mouth is affected and on whether surgery or grafting is needed. You receive a written estimate after your gum evaluation.

What affects the cost

  • The number of teeth or areas treated
  • Whether treatment is non-surgical or surgical
  • Graft materials and membranes, where used
  • Sedation, if you choose it

Many dental plans contribute to gum disease treatment and maintenance. Benefits are often set per quarter of the mouth. Our team can check your benefits and explain your options before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs of a gum infection?

Common signs include swollen, red, or tender gums, bleeding when brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath, pus between the teeth and gums, a bad taste in the mouth, and loosening of teeth. If any of these symptoms persist, a professional evaluation is important.

Can a gum infection go away on its own?

While mild gum inflammation (gingivitis) can sometimes improve with diligent home care, an active gum infection typically requires professional treatment to fully resolve. Delaying treatment allows the infection to spread deeper into the supporting structures, increasing the risk of permanent damage.

How is a gum infection treated?

Treatment depends on the severity and type of infection. Options range from professional cleaning and debridement to antibiotic therapy and surgical drainage. Dr. Geoffrey determines the appropriate approach based on the clinical findings and tailors the treatment to the individual case.

Is a gum infection dangerous?

Yes. Beyond the damage it causes to the gums and bone, a severe gum infection can spread to other areas of the body and has been linked to systemic health concerns including cardiovascular disease and diabetes complications. Prompt treatment is always recommended.

How can I prevent gum infections?

Good oral hygiene, including thorough brushing and daily flossing, combined with regular professional cleanings and periodontal evaluations are the most effective preventive measures. Patients with a history of gum disease should follow a periodontal maintenance schedule to keep infections from recurring.

Wow! The whole staff was amazing! From the moment I walked into the office I was taken care of until the moment I walked out. This lady named Iman was super sweet and accommodating. The assistant that worked on me, I believe her name is Alexandra, was so compassionate and caring. Beautiful office. Everyone is super friendly and nice. Very rare for a dental office where people are often miserable at their jobs. The one thing that stood out the most was that I was made to feel like family. The three dentists are actual family from what I understand (mother, father and son) but me, a complete stranger, was made to feel like a family member. That made me feel so good and so comfortable. My home is on Long Island, which is quite a ways away from Brooklyn (over an hour) but my experience was well worth my drive. I'm excited that I found this practice! Thanks to my friend Bill who referred me!!! Now visiting the dentist won't be as bad as it once was. My visit was very pleasant. :)

Everyone at Bensonhurst Dental is great! Super nice and treat you with utmost class and respect. When they say they're a family, they mean it. It's so nice to walk in and have people remember you and what you've told them. For someone like me who avoids the dentist as much as possible, I feel super comfortable there. Happy to be getting my ortho work done here!

Phenomenal service and results and one thing is for certain, You would not regret coming here.

I almost have no words for how happy i am with my entire experience with bensenhurst dental, but that wouldn't be me. For 15 years, due to genetics & bad dentistry, i thought i was going to be dealing with my two missing teeth for the rest of my life. My smile was never really a smile. It was a half smile, a hidden smile, a fake one. I was bullied about it. & I have aways been insecure about it. I have cried endlessly about how difficult it was on a daily basis to have this hanging over me. I have been embarassed to smile big. The hospitality field is my passion. & it is extremely hard to not smile all day at guests or clients for sometimes over 12 hours a day. To feel confident in your people skills while worrying if you've smiled too big was a personal hell I've gotten used to. But i was tired. I am a happy person, a grateful person & i needed my smile back. Fast forward to november 2021. The pandemic is dying down. Self love/care is at an all time high & so is self awareness. & thanks to my superhero mom i was able to get in this office. By this time I had watched the new smile videos for 3 years. But this time, I was determined to get mine. I was scared. I was uncomfortable. I was hoping for the best but this wasn't new for me. And then, i met dr. Marina. After that, the rest was history. The fear was history. I knew I was in hands that would care about me. & she did. Straight to the point, telling me what i needed like a mom would. I went from my skin crawling because of dentistry tools around me, to laughing & joking in the matter of 5 minutes. In 5 minutes she took years of a fear of uncertainty that has kept me from my smile & turned it into trust. Turned it into hope. My next visit i saw Dr Geoffrey. This was the surgery. The last time i had a needle before this I passed out. But he waited until i felt comfortable & here came more trust. Two 6 hour gum surgeries on different days. I didn't feel a thing sitting in that chair. What i do know is that i couldn't appreciate the detail more. My gums have never felt this good. Ever. Also, he debunked morning breath, its a lie, get your gums checked. I have only had my new smile for a day. & it might take me a while to get used to changing all the habits i had when i had to worry. But I wokeup this morning & couldn't believe my reflection. Is this really my mouth?! It is & I really cannot thank bensenhurst dental enough for their family oriented office & detailed care you give to your clients. I never once felt like i was around anyone who didn't have my best interests or feelings at heart. You didn't just give me my first real smile, you gave me my personality back. The one that was hiding under all those habits. I'm so thankful that i followed through with this office & I wouldn't tell anyone to go anywhere else. Thank you so much to the entire team. You brought me back to life. They aren't just out here fixing smiles, they are out here changing people's whole lives. I love you guys!!
