Gum Grafting for Recession in Brooklyn, NY

Surgery that covers exposed roots and thickens thin, receding gums.

What Is Gum Grafting?

Gum grafting is a surgical procedure that restores gum tissue in areas where recession has exposed the tooth roots. Gum recession occurs gradually, often without the patient noticing, and can result from periodontal disease, aggressive brushing, genetics, or the natural aging process. As the gum tissue recedes, the roots become vulnerable to sensitivity, decay, and further deterioration. Gum grafting covers the exposed roots, protects the teeth, and restores a healthier, more aesthetically pleasing gumline.

Signs You May Need a Gum Graft

Recession exposes the root, which has no enamel to protect it. A graft covers the root where possible and adds thick, stable gum tissue so recession does not continue.

  • Teeth that look longer than they used to
  • Sensitivity to cold at the gumline
  • A notch you can feel where the tooth meets the gum
  • Thin, fragile gum that is sore to brush
  • Recession that is getting worse between visits

Gum Grafting for Recession at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, gum grafting is performed by Dr. Geoffrey Rubinshtein, whose advanced periodontal training includes extensive experience in soft tissue reconstruction. Dr. Geoffrey evaluates the extent of recession, the health of the surrounding tissue, and the patient’s overall periodontal condition before recommending a grafting approach. Several techniques are available depending on the case, including connective tissue grafts, free gingival grafts, and pedicle grafts. Each approach has specific indications, and Dr. Geoffrey selects the one most likely to produce the best outcome for the individual patient.

What to Expect, Step by Step

The procedure involves harvesting a small amount of tissue, often from the palate or a donor source, and attaching it to the area of recession. The grafted tissue integrates with the existing gum tissue over the healing period, creating a thicker, more resilient barrier around the tooth. In addition to protecting the root surface, the graft restores gum coverage that contributes to a more even, natural smile.

  1. Evaluation. Recession and gum thickness are measured and the cause is identified.
  2. Numbing. Local anesthesia is given at the graft and donor sites.
  3. Graft. Tissue from the palate or a donor material is prepared.
  4. Placement. The graft is positioned over the root and secured with fine stitches.
  5. Healing checks. Stitches are reviewed after one to two weeks.

Types of gum graft

TypeTissue sourceMainly used for
Connective tissue graftFrom under the surface of the palateCovering exposed roots
Free gingival graftFrom the surface of the palateThickening thin gum
Donor tissue graftProcessed donor materialTreating several teeth without a palate site

Recession does not reverse on its own. A graft stops it and gives the tooth the protection it has lost.

Recovery and Aftercare

After your visit

The first 24 hours

  • Do not pull your lip to look at the site
  • Use cold packs and keep to cool, soft foods
  • Do not brush or floss the grafted area

The following days and weeks

  • Use the prescribed rinse instead of brushing the site until told otherwise
  • Avoid hard, crunchy and spicy foods for two weeks
  • Switch to a soft brush and gentle technique once healed

When to Call Us

Call the office on (718) 234-3434 if you notice any of the following:

  • Bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure
  • The graft looks loose or has moved
  • Increasing pain, swelling or fever

Grafting as Part of a Wider Plan

Gum grafting is often part of a broader periodontal treatment plan. Patients with recession driven by active gum disease may also require scaling and root planing or pocket reduction surgery to address the underlying condition before or alongside the grafting procedure. For patients concerned about root sensitivity caused by recession, grafting can provide lasting relief by covering and insulating the exposed root surface.

Cost and Insurance

The fee for periodontal treatment depends on how much of the mouth is affected and on whether surgery or grafting is needed. You receive a written estimate after your gum evaluation.

What affects the cost

  • The number of teeth or areas treated
  • Whether treatment is non-surgical or surgical
  • Graft materials and membranes, where used
  • Sedation, if you choose it

Many dental plans contribute to gum disease treatment and maintenance. Benefits are often set per quarter of the mouth. Our team can check your benefits and explain your options before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need gum grafting?

Signs that gum grafting may be needed include visible recession along the gumline, tooth sensitivity to hot and cold, teeth that appear longer than they used to, or notches at the base of the teeth near the gums. A periodontal evaluation with Dr. Geoffrey can confirm whether grafting is recommended.

Is gum grafting painful?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so patients do not feel pain during surgery. Post-operative discomfort is common, particularly at the donor site, but is manageable with prescribed pain medication and resolves within one to two weeks.

How long does recovery take?

Most patients resume normal activities within a few days, though full healing of the grafted area takes two to four weeks. A soft diet is recommended during the initial recovery period, and Dr. Geoffrey provides detailed aftercare instructions to support optimal healing.

Will the grafted tissue match my natural gums?

Yes. Over time, the grafted tissue blends with the surrounding gum tissue in both color and texture, producing a natural-looking result. Dr. Geoffrey’s technique is focused on achieving both functional protection and aesthetic harmony.

Can recession come back after grafting?

Gum grafting provides durable, long-lasting coverage, but the underlying factors that caused the recession, such as aggressive brushing habits or untreated gum disease, need to be addressed to prevent further recession in the future. Dr. Geoffrey guides each patient on how to protect their results long term.
