Periodontal Bone Grafting in Brooklyn, NY

Rebuilding jawbone lost to gum disease so teeth keep their support.

What Is Periodontal Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting in periodontics is used to regenerate bone that has been lost due to periodontal disease, trauma, or tooth extraction. The jawbone depends on the stimulation it receives from tooth roots to maintain its density and volume. When that stimulation is lost, the bone begins to resorb, compromising the stability of the remaining teeth and the viability of future implant placement. Bone grafting restores the lost structure and creates the foundation necessary for both natural tooth preservation and prosthetic replacement.

When Periodontal Bone Grafting Is Recommended

Gum disease destroys the bone around teeth in an uneven pattern. Where it has left a crater or a vertical defect, grafting can encourage new bone to grow and reduce the pocket.

  • Deep pockets with vertical bone defects on X-rays
  • Bone loss between the roots of a molar
  • A tooth with reduced support that can still be saved
  • Bone loss found during pocket reduction surgery
  • A site being prepared for a future implant

Periodontal Bone Grafting at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, periodontal bone grafting is performed by Dr. Geoffrey Rubinshtein, whose expertise in hard tissue regeneration is central to his periodontal and implant practice. The procedure involves placing biocompatible grafting material into the area of bone loss, where it serves as a scaffold that encourages the body to produce new bone. Depending on the case, Dr. Geoffrey may use the patient鈥檚 own bone, donor tissue, or synthetic materials. In many periodontal cases, grafting is combined with guided tissue regeneration techniques that use a barrier membrane to direct bone growth specifically where it is needed.

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. Imaging. X-rays or 3D imaging show the shape of the defect.
  2. Access. The gum is gently lifted under local anesthesia.
  3. Cleaning. The roots and the defect are thoroughly cleaned.
  4. Graft. Graft material is placed, often covered with a membrane.
  5. Closure. The gum is stitched and healing is monitored for several months.

A graft is a framework. Your own bone grows into it over months and gradually takes its place.

  • Pain, swelling or pus develops

How Bone Grafting Fits with Other Procedures

Bone grafting is commonly performed alongside pocket reduction surgery to rebuild bone destroyed by advanced periodontal disease. It is also essential in ridge preservation to maintain jaw volume after extraction and in implant site preparation to ensure adequate bone for implant placement. Dr. Geoffrey evaluates the extent of bone loss through clinical examination and advanced imaging before recommending the most appropriate grafting approach for each patient.

Cost and Insurance

The fee for periodontal treatment depends on how much of the mouth is affected and on whether surgery or grafting is needed. You receive a written estimate after your gum evaluation.

What affects the cost

  • The number of teeth or areas treated
  • Whether treatment is non-surgical or surgical
  • Graft materials and membranes, where used
  • Sedation, if you choose it

Many dental plans contribute to gum disease treatment and maintenance. Benefits are often set per quarter of the mouth. Our team can check your benefits and explain your options before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can bone lost to gum disease be regenerated?

In many cases, yes. Bone grafting combined with guided tissue regeneration can restore bone that has been destroyed by periodontal disease. The degree of regeneration depends on the size, shape, and location of the defect. Dr. Geoffrey evaluates each case to determine what is achievable.

How long does it take for a bone graft to heal?

Healing time varies by case but typically ranges from three to six months. During this period, the grafting material integrates with the existing bone and new bone forms around it. Dr. Geoffrey monitors progress with clinical evaluation and imaging to confirm readiness for any subsequent procedures.

Is bone grafting painful?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and most patients report manageable discomfort afterward. Swelling and mild soreness are common in the first few days and resolve as the area heals. Pain medication and aftercare instructions are provided to support a comfortable recovery.

What happens if I don鈥檛 get a bone graft when one is recommended?

Without grafting, bone loss will continue, which can lead to loosening and eventual loss of adjacent teeth, collapse of the jaw ridge, and elimination of future implant options. Addressing bone loss early preserves more options and simplifies treatment down the road.

Is periodontal bone grafting the same as bone grafting for implants?

The techniques and materials are similar, but the goals differ. Periodontal bone grafting focuses on regenerating bone around existing teeth to preserve them. Implant bone grafting rebuilds the ridge to support a new implant. In some cases, both objectives are addressed simultaneously.

Hello everyone, I would like to highlight the brilliant work of Dr. Geoffrey, who performed the installation of two implants on my lower jaw for me. I lost 2 teeth a long time ago and unfortunately at that time no one informed me that it is necessary to install dental implants as soon as possible, before the bone tissue began to decrease. Now I know all this and much more about teeth and caring for them, thanks to the Bensonhurst Dental team. My greatest fear was that I had lost too much bone tissue. The Bensonhurst Dental team took care of me. Dr. Geoffrey, a periodontist, examined the bone tissue and assured me that we would be able to build up bone tissue and install dental implants. Dr. Marina, a specialist in cosmetic dentistry, and Dr. Nick, an orthodontist, recommended starting with orthodontic treatment, because due to the absence of several chewing teeth, the remaining teeth began to move and tilted so that there was not enough space for installing implants and crowns. Time flies and I will soon finish my orthodontic treatment, and a few months ago we were able to install dental implants, a couple of weeks ago we installed gum formers and very soon we will start work on installing crowns. But I am not going to stop there, because teeth need to be taken care of constantly, a healthy, beautiful smile makes us attractive and young. I can't wait until we finish the ortho treatment and install the implants crowns. After that, it is necessary to do a good cleaning of the teeth and I think to do whitening! Learn from other people's mistakes and choose good dentists!
