Simple Tooth Extractions in Brooklyn, NY

Removal of a fully visible tooth under local anesthesia, without incisions.

What Is a Simple Tooth Extraction?

A simple extraction is the removal of a tooth that is fully visible in the mouth and can be accessed without the need for surgical incision or bone removal. Simple extractions are most commonly performed on teeth that are severely decayed, fractured above the gumline, loosened by periodontal disease, or no longer restorable. The procedure is straightforward, typically quick, and performed under local anesthesia for complete comfort.

When a Simple Extraction Is Needed

A simple extraction is used when the whole crown of the tooth is above the gum and the roots are straightforward. It is a short procedure done under local anesthesia.

  • A tooth too decayed or broken to restore
  • A tooth loosened by gum disease
  • A baby tooth that has not fallen out
  • Extractions planned before braces
  • A failed tooth with an intact crown

Simple Tooth Extractions at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, the dental team performs simple extractions with an emphasis on gentle technique and minimal tissue disruption. The tooth is carefully loosened from its socket using specialized instruments and removed intact. Because the surrounding bone and gum tissue are preserved as much as possible, healing is generally rapid and uncomplicated. Patients receive clear aftercare instructions to support recovery and are monitored to ensure the site heals properly.

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. X-ray. The roots and surrounding bone are checked.
  2. Numbing. Local anesthesia is given; you feel pressure but not pain.
  3. Loosening. The tooth is gently loosened from its ligament.
  4. Removal. The tooth is lifted out.
  5. Socket care. The socket is cleaned and gauze placed; a graft is added if planned.
  6. Instructions. Aftercare is explained and given in writing.

A typical recovery timeline

TimeWhat to expectWhat to do
First 24 hoursA blood clot forms; some oozingBite on gauze, rest, no rinsing or spitting
Days 2 to 3Swelling peaks, then easesWarm salt-water rinses and soft foods
Days 4 to 7The gum begins to closeGradual return to a normal diet
Weeks 2 to 4Soft tissue healsNormal care

The blood clot is the dressing. Nearly every aftercare instruction is about protecting it.

Recovery and Aftercare

After surgery

The first 24 hours

  • Bite firmly on gauze for 30 to 45 minutes
  • Do not rinse, spit, smoke or use a straw
  • Use cold packs and take pain relief before the numbness wears off

The following days and weeks

  • Rinse gently with warm salt water after meals from day two
  • Brush other teeth normally, avoiding the socket
  • Eat soft foods for a few days

When to Call Us

Call the office on (718) 234-3434 if you notice any of the following:

  • Bleeding that does not stop after an hour of firm pressure
  • Severe throbbing pain two to four days later, which may be a dry socket
  • Swelling, fever or a bad taste

Replacing the Tooth

Whenever a tooth is extracted, the question of replacement should be considered. Leaving a gap in the dental arch can lead to shifting of the adjacent teeth, changes in bite alignment, and bone loss in the extraction area over time. Socket preservation performed at the time of extraction can protect the bone for a future dental implant. For patients who need or prefer a non-implant solution, a dental bridge is another effective option for restoring the space.

Cost and Insurance

The fee for an extraction depends on how difficult the tooth is to remove. You are told the fee before the procedure.

What affects the cost

  • Whether the extraction is simple or surgical
  • The number of teeth removed
  • Grafting to preserve the socket, if chosen
  • Sedation, if used

Most dental plans contribute to extractions. Coverage for grafting varies. Our team can check your benefits and explain your options before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a simple extraction painful?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so patients feel pressure but not pain during the extraction. Mild soreness after the anesthesia wears off is normal and typically manageable with over-the-counter pain medication.

How long does recovery take?

Most patients feel comfortable within one to two days. The extraction site continues to heal over the following week or two. Avoiding hard or crunchy foods, not using straws, and following the provided aftercare instructions help ensure a smooth recovery.

What is the difference between a simple and a surgical extraction?

A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible and accessible above the gumline. A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is broken below the gumline, impacted, or requires bone removal or an incision to access. The dental team determines which approach is appropriate based on the condition of the tooth.

Do I need to replace the tooth after extraction?

In most cases, replacing an extracted tooth is recommended to prevent shifting, bite problems, and bone loss. The dental team discusses replacement options before the extraction so patients can plan accordingly.

Can I eat normally after a simple extraction?

Soft foods are recommended for the first day or two following the extraction. Patients can gradually return to their normal diet as the site heals. Hot liquids and hard, crunchy, or spicy foods should be avoided in the initial recovery period.
