Socket Preservation in Brooklyn, NY

A graft placed in an extraction socket to keep the bone for a future implant.

What Is Socket Preservation?

Socket preservation is a procedure performed immediately after a tooth extraction to prevent the bone loss that naturally occurs once a tooth is removed. When a tooth is taken out, the surrounding bone begins to resorb within weeks, and the socket collapses as it heals. By placing grafting material into the extraction site at the time of removal, socket preservation maintains the bone volume and ridge contour, keeping the site viable for a future dental implant or other restoration.

Who Should Have Socket Preservation

Most of the bone loss after an extraction happens in the first few months. Socket preservation is a small addition to the extraction that keeps your options open.

  • A tooth is being removed and an implant is planned
  • You are undecided about replacement and want to keep the option
  • The extraction is in the smile zone
  • The outer socket wall is thin
  • A bridge is planned and the gum contour matters

Socket Preservation at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, socket preservation is performed by Dr. Geoffrey Rubinshtein as part of a proactive approach to implant planning. Rather than waiting for bone loss to occur and then addressing it with more extensive bone grafting or ridge augmentation procedures, socket preservation protects the bone from the start. The procedure is straightforward: after the tooth is extracted, the socket is cleaned, filled with biocompatible grafting material, and often covered with a membrane to protect the graft during healing.

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. Extraction. The tooth is removed gently.
  2. Cleaning. The socket is cleaned.
  3. Graft. Graft material fills the socket.
  4. Seal. A membrane or collagen plug covers the graft and a stitch holds it in place.
  5. Healing. The site heals for three to six months.

When It Matters Most

Socket preservation is especially important for patients who plan to receive an implant but need time before the implant can be placed, whether for financial, medical, or treatment-sequencing reasons. It is also recommended for extraction sites in the aesthetic zone, where maintaining bone and gum contour is critical for a natural-looking final result. Patients who skip socket preservation and return months or years later for an implant often face the need for additional grafting procedures that could have been avoided.

Cost and Insurance

Implant treatment is priced in stages: the surgery, any grafting that is needed, and the teeth that are attached. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before treatment starts.

What affects the cost

  • The number of implants
  • Whether bone grafting or a sinus lift is needed
  • The type of restoration: a crown, a bridge or a full arch
  • 3D imaging, surgical guides and sedation, where used

Coverage for implants varies widely between plans. Some cover the crown but not the implant, and some have a yearly maximum. Our team can check your benefits and explain your options before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is socket preservation necessary after every extraction?

Not always, but it is strongly recommended whenever an implant is being considered for the future, or when the extraction site is in an area where bone and tissue preservation matter for aesthetics. Dr. Geoffrey advises on a case-by-case basis.

Does socket preservation add recovery time?

The recovery from socket preservation is very similar to a standard extraction. Most patients experience the same level of discomfort and healing time they would after an extraction alone. The graft integrates quietly while the socket heals.

How long after socket preservation can an implant be placed?

Implant placement is typically possible three to four months after socket preservation, depending on the rate of bone regeneration. Dr. Geoffrey evaluates the site to confirm adequate healing before proceeding.

What happens if I don’t have socket preservation after an extraction?

Without preservation, the bone around the extraction site begins to resorb immediately. Over time, this can result in a narrow, collapsed ridge that requires more extensive grafting before an implant can be placed, adding time and complexity to the treatment.

Is the procedure painful?

Local anesthesia is used to ensure complete comfort during the procedure. Most patients feel nothing during placement and experience little to no discomfort afterward. The appointment is typically quick and straightforward.

What Our Patients Say

I had a great experience at Bensonhurst Dental. I got a teeth implant placed yesterday and was really nervous going into it, but Dr. Marina made me feel so comfortable from start to finish. She was extremely professional and didn’t make me feel rushed at all, she really took her time with me which showed how much she genuinely cares. She kept checking in to make sure I was okay, and while numbing me, she constantly asked about my pain level, which really reassured me. Elisa cleaned my teeth and did an amazing job. She was quick, thorough, and very efficient. I also had the rest of my veneers done here about 8–9 years ago, and I keep coming back because they still look perfect . They truly feel like family in this office , and I can’t imagine going to another dental office. Overall, they were both excellent, and I’m very happy with the outcome. I highly recommend them both !

Been going here for years and would be loathe to go anywhere else! Good folks, excellent methods. Every time I come in there’s something new and innovative going on to help patients. Absolutely recommend.

Dr. Marina and Dr. Alex first became our family dentists 35 years ago. Dr. Marina had to restore all my teeth, replacing metal crowns and lead filings back then. This time it was implants and zirconium crowns. And she did an absolutely amazing job again! Her attention to details, superb professional skills and strive to perfection makes her the best doctor I've ever seen. Each person in the staff was very professional, courteous and friendly, from the office coordinator Kevin, to receptionist Julia, dental assistants Julia and Anya. Because the round trip to the office for me now was six hours, they accommodated my schedule to cut the number of visits to the minimum. The best dental office you can find, thank you so much!

Honestly the best dental business I have ever been too I love it here. Customer service is wonderful the work it’s self is amazing. I’m honestly very happy I found this place.

Awesome doctors and staff, they made me feel very at home and as comfortable as possible — I would highly recommend them to anyone and everyone looking for a dentist!
