Sinus Lift Surgery in Brooklyn, NY

Adding bone beneath the sinus so implants can be placed in the upper back jaw.

What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift, also known as a sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw in the area of the premolars and molars. The maxillary sinuses sit directly above this region, and when teeth are lost, the sinus floor can drop and the bone beneath it can thin over time. A sinus lift raises the sinus membrane and places bone grafting material beneath it to increase the volume of bone available for implant placement.

Sinus Lift Surgery: Quick Facts

Number of visits1 procedure, plus follow-up
Time needed60 to 90 minutes

Recovery timeOne to two weeks

These are typical ranges. Your own plan is confirmed after an examination.

Who Needs a Sinus Lift

The upper back teeth sit just below the maxillary sinus. After those teeth are lost, the bone shrinks and the sinus expands downward, leaving too little bone for an implant. A sinus lift restores that height.

  • Missing upper molars or premolars
  • Less than about 8 mm of bone height on a 3D scan
  • Teeth that have been missing for years
  • A naturally large sinus
  • Bone lost to gum disease in the upper back jaw

Sinus Lift Surgery at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, sinus lifts are performed by Dr. Geoffrey Rubinshtein, whose periodontal training and surgical expertise ensure the procedure is carried out with precision and care. The process involves creating a small opening in the bone to access the sinus membrane, gently lifting the membrane upward, and filling the space beneath it with bone grafting material. The grafted area then heals over several months, producing new bone that is dense enough to anchor an implant securely.

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. 3D scan. Bone height and sinus anatomy are measured.
  2. Numbing. Local anesthesia is given, with sedation if chosen.
  3. Access. A small opening is made, either through the implant site or from the side of the jaw.
  4. Lift. The sinus membrane is gently raised.
  5. Graft. Bone graft is placed in the space created.
  6. Healing. Bone matures over four to nine months; in some cases the implant is placed at the same visit.

A sinus lift sounds dramatic. In practice it is one of the most routine and predictable procedures in implant dentistry.

A Common Step in Upper Jaw Implants

Sinus lifts are one of the most common preparatory procedures in upper jaw implant dentistry. Patients who have been told they lack sufficient bone for implants in the back of the upper jaw are frequently excellent candidates for a sinus lift followed by implant placement. In some cases, the sinus lift and implant placement can be performed simultaneously if enough existing bone is present to achieve primary implant stability.

Cost and Insurance

Implant treatment is priced in stages: the surgery, any grafting that is needed, and the teeth that are attached. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before treatment starts.

What affects the cost

  • The number of implants
  • Whether bone grafting or a sinus lift is needed
  • The type of restoration: a crown, a bridge or a full arch
  • 3D imaging, surgical guides and sedation, where used

Coverage for implants varies widely between plans. Some cover the crown but not the implant, and some have a yearly maximum. Our team can check your benefits and explain your options before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need a sinus lift?

A sinus lift is needed when there is not enough bone height in the upper jaw to support a dental implant, which is common in the premolar and molar region. This is determined through diagnostic imaging during the implant planning process. Dr. Geoffrey will inform you if a sinus lift is necessary as part of your treatment plan.

Is a sinus lift a major surgery?

A sinus lift is a routine procedure in implant dentistry and is performed under local anesthesia in the office. While it is a surgical procedure, it is well-tolerated and most patients recover comfortably within a week to ten days.

How long after a sinus lift can I get implants?

Healing time is typically four to nine months depending on the volume of graft placed and the patient’s healing response. In some cases where adequate existing bone allows, implants can be placed at the same time as the sinus lift.

What are the risks of a sinus lift?

The most common risk is perforation of the sinus membrane, which is managed during surgery if it occurs. Infection and graft failure are rare but possible. Dr. Geoffrey’s experience and meticulous technique minimize these risks significantly.

Will I have sinus problems after the procedure?

Sinus lifts do not cause chronic sinus issues. Temporary congestion or mild pressure may occur during the initial healing period but resolves as the area heals. Patients are given post-operative instructions to protect the graft, including avoiding nose blowing and sneezing through the nose for a period of time.

What Our Patients Say

I had a great experience at Bensonhurst Dental. I got a teeth implant placed yesterday and was really nervous going into it, but Dr. Marina made me feel so comfortable from start to finish. She was extremely professional and didn’t make me feel rushed at all, she really took her time with me which showed how much she genuinely cares. She kept checking in to make sure I was okay, and while numbing me, she constantly asked about my pain level, which really reassured me. Elisa cleaned my teeth and did an amazing job. She was quick, thorough, and very efficient. I also had the rest of my veneers done here about 8–9 years ago, and I keep coming back because they still look perfect . They truly feel like family in this office , and I can’t imagine going to another dental office. Overall, they were both excellent, and I’m very happy with the outcome. I highly recommend them both !

The best dentists on the planet. Very knowledgeable and patient with everyone. I had a complex case where I had to get implants redone and they actually had to do some detective work to find out the implants I previously had placed by another dentist. Trust me they had their work cut out for them but they did it! I definitely recommend them for any dental and implant/smile makeover work!
