Laser Treatment of Gum Disease Bacteria in Brooklyn, NY

Laser decontamination of infected gum pockets, used alongside deep cleaning.

How Lasers Treat Gum Disease Bacteria

Bacterial infection is the driving force behind gum disease. Harmful bacteria colonize the spaces between the teeth and gums, triggering an inflammatory response that, over time, destroys the gum tissue and bone supporting the teeth. Laser treatment of gum disease bacteria uses focused laser energy to target and eliminate these bacterial colonies below the gumline with a level of precision that traditional cleaning instruments alone cannot achieve.

Who Laser Bacterial Treatment Is For

Gum disease is driven by bacteria living in the pockets around teeth. Laser decontamination reduces those bacteria in areas where disease is active, and is used together with mechanical cleaning rather than in place of it.

  • Active gum disease with bleeding pockets
  • Pockets that have not fully responded to deep cleaning
  • Sites that flare up between maintenance visits
  • Patients with diabetes or who smoke
  • Inflammation around implants

Laser Treatment of Gum Disease Bacteria at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, laser bacterial treatment is provided by Dr. Alex Rubinshtein as part of the practice’s advanced approach to periodontal care. The laser is directed into the periodontal pockets, where it destroys bacteria and their byproducts without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue. The treatment can be performed as a standalone procedure or in combination with scaling and root planing to enhance the effectiveness of non-surgical periodontal treatment.

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. Charting. Pocket depths and bleeding sites are recorded.
  2. Numbing. Local anesthesia is used if needed.
  3. Cleaning. Scaling and root planing remove tartar.
  4. Laser decontamination. A fiber is passed through each affected pocket.
  5. Re-evaluation. Pockets are measured again after several weeks.

Preventive laser reduction, laser bacterial treatment and LANAP

TreatmentFor whomGoal
Preventive laser bacterial reductionHealthy or mildly inflamed gumsKeep bacteria low before disease develops
Laser treatment of gum disease bacteriaActive gum diseaseDecontaminate infected pockets
LANAPModerate to advanced periodontitisTreat disease and encourage reattachment

Tartar has to be removed by hand. Bacteria in the soft tissue are where a laser adds something a scaler cannot.

  • A gum swelling appears
  • Bleeding increases
  • Pain lasts beyond two days

How It Relates to Other Gum Treatments

This service is closely related to preventive laser bacterial reduction, which targets bacteria before disease develops. The distinction is one of timing and intent: preventive reduction is proactive care for at-risk patients, while treatment of gum disease bacteria is an active intervention for patients with diagnosed periodontal disease. Both services leverage the same laser technology and Dr. Alex’s expertise to deliver targeted bacterial elimination below the gumline.

For patients with advanced gum disease, laser bacterial treatment may be part of a broader periodontal care plan that includes LANAP and ongoing periodontal maintenance with Dr. Geoffrey Rubinshtein. The combination of laser technology and specialized periodontal care provides patients with the most comprehensive defense against the progression of gum disease.

Cost and Insurance

Laser treatment is priced by the procedure, not by the use of the laser itself. You are told the fee before treatment.

What affects the cost

  • The procedure being carried out
  • The number of teeth or areas treated
  • The number of sessions needed
  • Whether the laser is used alone or alongside another treatment

Insurance usually covers a laser procedure in the same way as the conventional version of that procedure. Therapy sessions for pain relief may not be covered. Our team can check your benefits and explain your options before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is laser bacterial treatment different from a regular cleaning?

A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces. Laser bacterial treatment targets the bacteria themselves within the periodontal pockets using light energy, reaching areas and organisms that mechanical cleaning alone may not fully address. The two treatments work well together.

Is the treatment painful?

No. Laser bacterial treatment is gentle and comfortable. Most patients feel little to no sensation during the procedure and do not require anesthesia.

How often do I need this treatment?

Frequency depends on the severity of the gum disease and the patient’s response to treatment. For some patients, laser bacterial treatment is incorporated into every periodontal maintenance visit. Dr. Alex recommends a schedule based on individual needs.

Can laser treatment cure gum disease?

Laser treatment is a powerful tool for reducing bacterial load and supporting healing, but gum disease is a chronic condition that requires ongoing management. Laser treatment is most effective when combined with regular professional care, good home hygiene, and a consistent maintenance schedule.

Is this the same as LANAP?

No. LANAP is a specific, FDA-cleared protocol for treating moderate to severe periodontal disease that includes tissue regeneration. Laser bacterial treatment is a less intensive procedure focused specifically on reducing bacterial colonies within the pockets. Dr. Alex determines which approach is appropriate based on the patient’s condition.

I have been a patient of Bensonhurst Dental Care since 1999. I am extremely happy to know the best group of dentists in Brooklyn. My smile looks amazing. The words can't describe how grateful I am. Dr. Rubinshtein's staff is amazing. I recommend this place to all my friends and family memebers

I almost have no words for how happy i am with my entire experience with bensenhurst dental, but that wouldn't be me. For 15 years, due to genetics & bad dentistry, i thought i was going to be dealing with my two missing teeth for the rest of my life. My smile was never really a smile. It was a half smile, a hidden smile, a fake one. I was bullied about it. & I have aways been insecure about it. I have cried endlessly about how difficult it was on a daily basis to have this hanging over me. I have been embarassed to smile big. The hospitality field is my passion. & it is extremely hard to not smile all day at guests or clients for sometimes over 12 hours a day. To feel confident in your people skills while worrying if you've smiled too big was a personal hell I've gotten used to. But i was tired. I am a happy person, a grateful person & i needed my smile back. Fast forward to november 2021. The pandemic is dying down. Self love/care is at an all time high & so is self awareness. & thanks to my superhero mom i was able to get in this office. By this time I had watched the new smile videos for 3 years. But this time, I was determined to get mine. I was scared. I was uncomfortable. I was hoping for the best but this wasn't new for me. And then, i met dr. Marina. After that, the rest was history. The fear was history. I knew I was in hands that would care about me. & she did. Straight to the point, telling me what i needed like a mom would. I went from my skin crawling because of dentistry tools around me, to laughing & joking in the matter of 5 minutes. In 5 minutes she took years of a fear of uncertainty that has kept me from my smile & turned it into trust. Turned it into hope. My next visit i saw Dr Geoffrey. This was the surgery. The last time i had a needle before this I passed out. But he waited until i felt comfortable & here came more trust. Two 6 hour gum surgeries on different days. I didn't feel a thing sitting in that chair. What i do know is that i couldn't appreciate the detail more. My gums have never felt this good. Ever. Also, he debunked morning breath, its a lie, get your gums checked. I have only had my new smile for a day. & it might take me a while to get used to changing all the habits i had when i had to worry. But I wokeup this morning & couldn't believe my reflection. Is this really my mouth?! It is & I really cannot thank bensenhurst dental enough for their family oriented office & detailed care you give to your clients. I never once felt like i was around anyone who didn't have my best interests or feelings at heart. You didn't just give me my first real smile, you gave me my personality back. The one that was hiding under all those habits. I'm so thankful that i followed through with this office & I wouldn't tell anyone to go anywhere else. Thank you so much to the entire team. You brought me back to life. They aren't just out here fixing smiles, they are out here changing people's whole lives. I love you guys!!
