How Lasers Treat Mouth Ulcers and Lesions

Oral ulcers and soft tissue lesions can cause significant pain and discomfort, interfering with eating, speaking, and daily life. Common conditions include canker sores (aphthous ulcers), cold sores, traumatic ulcers from biting or irritation, and other mucosal lesions. Laser treatment offers rapid relief by using focused light energy to promote healing, reduce inflammation, and in many cases, eliminate pain almost immediately.

When to Consider Laser Treatment for a Sore

Most mouth ulcers heal on their own in one to two weeks. Laser treatment is for sores that are too painful to wait out, or that return often.

  • A canker sore that makes eating or speaking painful
  • The tingling that signals a cold sore is starting
  • Frequent sores, several times a year
  • A sore spot from a denture or brace
  • An important event before a sore would heal naturally

Laser Treatment of Mouth Ulcers and Lesions at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, laser treatment of oral ulcers and lesions is provided by Dr. Alex Rubinshtein. The laser is applied directly to the affected area in a quick, non-invasive procedure that typically takes only a few minutes. The laser energy stimulates cellular repair, reduces bacterial contamination at the site, and seals exposed nerve endings, which is why patients often experience immediate or near-immediate pain relief. No anesthesia is required, and there is no recovery period.

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. Examination. The sore is examined to confirm it is a type that should be treated this way.
  2. Laser application. Low-level laser energy is applied for a minute or two, without touching the sore.
  3. Relief. Most patients notice less pain right away.
  4. Advice. We discuss triggers and prevention.
  5. Follow-up. Any sore that has not healed in two weeks is re-examined.

Recovery and Aftercare

After laser treatment

The first 24 hours

  • Avoid acidic, salty and spicy foods
  • Do not touch or pick at the area
  • Use a soft toothbrush

The following days

  • Keep a note of likely triggers such as stress, certain foods or injury
  • Use a toothpaste without sodium lauryl sulfate if sores recur
  • Come in at the first tingle of a cold sore

When to Call Us

Call the office on (718) 234-3434 if you notice any of the following:

  • A sore lasts longer than two weeks
  • A sore is unusually large, or you have several at once with fever
  • A patch is painless but persistent

Acute and Recurrent Sores

Laser treatment is effective for both acute lesions that are causing current discomfort and recurrent conditions such as chronic canker sores. Patients who suffer from frequent outbreaks often find that laser treatment not only resolves the current lesion faster but can also reduce the frequency and severity of future occurrences. For any lesion that appears unusual, does not heal within a normal timeframe, or raises concern, Dr. Alex evaluates it thoroughly and may recommend further diagnostic steps, including referral for biopsy if appropriate. Regular oral cancer screenings remain an important part of monitoring oral soft tissue health.

Cost and Insurance

Laser treatment is priced by the procedure, not by the use of the laser itself. You are told the fee before treatment.

What affects the cost

  • The procedure being carried out
  • The number of teeth or areas treated
  • The number of sessions needed
  • Whether the laser is used alone or alongside another treatment

Insurance usually covers a laser procedure in the same way as the conventional version of that procedure. Therapy sessions for pain relief may not be covered. Our team can check your benefits and explain your options before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly does laser treatment relieve ulcer pain?

Many patients experience significant pain relief immediately during or shortly after the laser treatment. The laser seals nerve endings and reduces inflammation at the site, providing rapid comfort that traditional topical treatments often cannot match.

Can laser treatment prevent canker sores from coming back?

While laser treatment cannot guarantee prevention, many patients report that treating lesions with laser energy reduces the frequency and severity of recurrences. Early treatment at the first sign of an outbreak tends to produce the best results.

Is the treatment painful?

No. The laser application is gentle and most patients feel only a mild warming sensation. No anesthesia is needed, and the procedure is completed in just a few minutes.

When should I seek treatment for an oral lesion?

Any sore or lesion that is causing significant pain, has not healed within two weeks, is growing in size, or appears different from previous occurrences should be evaluated professionally. Persistent or unusual lesions may require further diagnostic evaluation.

Does insurance cover laser treatment of ulcers?

Coverage varies by insurance plan. The Bensonhurst Dental Care team can help verify benefits and discuss costs before treatment. Given the speed and effectiveness of the procedure, many patients find the out-of-pocket cost very reasonable.

The Best Dental Office – Professional, Caring, and Truly Transformative! In my opinion, Bensonhurst Dental is the best dental office I’ve ever visited—I truly can’t recommend them enough! My journey started with a consultation and treatment plan tailored specifically for me. From the very beginning, I felt supported, understood, and cared for like never before. First, Dr. Geoffrey performed a tooth extraction with incredible care and professionalism, making me feel completely at ease throughout the process. After that, Dr. Nick installed braces to align my teeth and correct my bite—he was meticulous and reassuring every step of the way. He also used laser treatment to gently reshape my gums, enhancing both the health and aesthetics of my smile. Finally, Dr. Marina installed beautiful veneers that gave my teeth a flawless, snow-white finish. Her attention to detail and artistic approach made all the difference in completing my transformation. I have to admit that over the years my dentist and I have tried many different ways to eliminate the staining in my teeth. Ultimately I decided to give laser whitening a whirl, and I went in with no expectations so that I could avoid disappointment. Being that I have always been a little scared of the dentist, I was relieved when I met the person who would be taking care of me. She thoroughly explained the entire process helping me to become at ease with what was about to happen. After the procedure, I was amazed at the looks on everyone’s faces as it seemed to work. They finally handed me a mirror and I was finally convinced that I should have done this a long time ago. After all was said and done, I left with some parting gifts and a new smile. Both friends and family immediately noticed I had done something (without my saying so) and definitely reassured me that Bensonhurst Dental Care did a fantastic job. Thank you very much for the work and a special thank you to Valerie who pretty much held my hand through everything.

Great atmosphere and great people! They are very caring and make sure you understand everything that needs to be done. They take their time with you so you definitely don’t feel like you’re being rushed out or as if you’re just another patient. Highly recommend coming here.

Bensonhurst Dental has been my go to general dental and cosmetic dental doctors since high school. You're not going to find anything like this place almost anywhere in NY. Not only do that have a high tech lab upstairs to custom-make on-site dental cosmetics, which they work with hand in hand to ensure perfect size color and fitness (don't overlook this!), but the team consists of a family of specialists. From Danny who specializes in full mouth restorations and custom veneers, to his father Alex who is an oral surgeon expert as far as root canals and the latest in laser dentistry with expensive modern high tech on-site equipment, and Marina with the motherly touch who ensures client satisfaction and who has an incredible eye for cosmetic perfection and detail. But beyond these for dentists, who can service the complete full range of dental services and all often work together on one patient, there's also a full staff of dental hygienists, whitening experts, assistants, front desk staff. The place does not cut corners on manpower. And they're fully renovated as of this year, the place is gorgeous and everything is brand new and up to date. I've been very proactive about my oral health since I neglected my teeth during graduate school. They brought me back to full oral health from new crowns to fillings and helped me avoid a near certain root canal. I now come here every 3-4 months for a cleaning, so I don't have to undergo the damage I went through while neglecting to see a dentist for 2 years. I give this place the highest 5 stars I've ever given a service professional, and I cannot emphasize how blessed I've been to have Bensonhurst Dental care, and how much of a vocal fan you will be if you come here for any dental or cosmetic work. To sum it up in 1 sentence: they really care. Thank you to the team for all your hard work. You have one big fan here
