Laser Gum Contouring (Gingivectomy) in Brooklyn, NY

Laser removal of excess gum tissue to even out the gumline and show more of each tooth.

What Is Laser Gum Contouring?

Laser gum contouring, also known as a laser gingivectomy, is a cosmetic procedure that reshapes the gumline by removing excess gum tissue with focused laser energy. Patients who feel their smile shows too much gum, or whose gumline is uneven, can benefit from this treatment. The laser precisely removes the targeted tissue, instantly revealing more of the tooth surface and creating a more balanced, proportionate smile.

Who Laser Gum Contouring Is For

Gum contouring suits patients whose teeth are a normal length but are partly hidden by gum. It changes gum tissue only, so it is appropriate when the bone level underneath is already where it should be.

  • A gummy smile
  • Teeth that look short or square
  • A gumline that is higher on one side than the other
  • Gum overgrowth caused by braces or certain medications
  • Planned veneers or crowns that need an even gumline first

Laser Gum Contouring (Gingivectomy) at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, laser gum contouring is performed by Dr. Alex Rubinshtein, whose expertise in laser dentistry ensures that the procedure is both precise and comfortable. The laser seals the tissue as it works, which means minimal bleeding, no need for sutures, and a significantly faster recovery compared to traditional surgical methods. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure, and many cases require no anesthesia at all.

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. Smile assessment. Tooth and gum proportions are measured and the new gumline is planned.
  2. Numbing. Local or topical anesthesia is applied.
  3. Marking. The planned gumline is marked for your approval.
  4. Laser contouring. Excess gum is removed and sealed by the laser.
  5. Review. The result is checked and care instructions are given.

  • Pain that increases after two days
  • The gumline looks uneven once healed

Contouring as Part of a Smile Plan

Gum contouring is often performed as a standalone cosmetic treatment, but it can also be an important preparatory step before other aesthetic work. Patients planning porcelain veneers or other cosmetic treatments may benefit from contouring the gumline first to ensure ideal symmetry and proportion in the final result. For cases that require bone recontouring in addition to soft tissue adjustment, crown lengthening performed by Dr. Geoffrey Rubinshtein may be the more appropriate procedure.

Cost and Insurance

Laser treatment is priced by the procedure, not by the use of the laser itself. You are told the fee before treatment.

What affects the cost

  • The procedure being carried out
  • The number of teeth or areas treated
  • The number of sessions needed
  • Whether the laser is used alone or alongside another treatment

Insurance usually covers a laser procedure in the same way as the conventional version of that procedure. Therapy sessions for pain relief may not be covered. Our team can check your benefits and explain your options before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser gum contouring painful?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort. The laser is gentle on the tissue and many procedures can be completed without anesthesia. For patients who prefer it, a topical numbing agent or local anesthetic can be applied.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery is significantly faster than with traditional surgical contouring. Most patients feel comfortable within a day or two and see their final results within one to two weeks as the tissue fully heals. There are no sutures to manage.

Is gum contouring the same as crown lengthening?

Not exactly. Gum contouring addresses soft tissue only and is primarily cosmetic. Crown lengthening is a more involved procedure that may include bone recontouring and is often performed for both functional and aesthetic reasons. Dr. Alex and Dr. Geoffrey coordinate to determine which approach is appropriate for each case.

Will the gum tissue grow back after contouring?

In most cases, the results of gum contouring are permanent. The tissue that is removed does not regenerate, so the improved gumline shape is maintained long term.

How long does the procedure take?

Laser gum contouring is typically completed in a single office visit lasting 30 to 60 minutes depending on the extent of the reshaping. Patients can return to their normal routine the same day.

What Our Patients Say

I have had the absolute best experiences at Bensonhurst Dental Care! The atmosphere is warm and calming. Everyone who works there is kind and helpful. I have been a patient for approximately 20 years. After a bad fall, I needed dental work and the work was amazing! After approximately 20 years later, Dr. Rubinshtein did it again and gave my smile the lift it needed. I updated my smile with new veneers! The time, patience, knowledge, and work done has been wonderful. If you want your teeth to get the absolute best treatment, Bensonhurst Dental is the only place you should go.

Bensonhurst Dental has been my go to general dental and cosmetic dental doctors since high school. You're not going to find anything like this place almost anywhere in NY. Not only do that have a high tech lab upstairs to custom-make on-site dental cosmetics, which they work with hand in hand to ensure perfect size color and fitness (don't overlook this!), but the team consists of a family of specialists. From Danny who specializes in full mouth restorations and custom veneers, to his father Alex who is an oral surgeon expert as far as root canals and the latest in laser dentistry with expensive modern high tech on-site equipment, and Marina with the motherly touch who ensures client satisfaction and who has an incredible eye for cosmetic perfection and detail. But beyond these for dentists, who can service the complete full range of dental services and all often work together on one patient, there's also a full staff of dental hygienists, whitening experts, assistants, front desk staff. The place does not cut corners on manpower. And they're fully renovated as of this year, the place is gorgeous and everything is brand new and up to date. I've been very proactive about my oral health since I neglected my teeth during graduate school. They brought me back to full oral health from new crowns to fillings and helped me avoid a near certain root canal. I now come here every 3-4 months for a cleaning, so I don't have to undergo the damage I went through while neglecting to see a dentist for 2 years. I give this place the highest 5 stars I've ever given a service professional, and I cannot emphasize how blessed I've been to have Bensonhurst Dental care, and how much of a vocal fan you will be if you come here for any dental or cosmetic work. To sum it up in 1 sentence: they really care. Thank you to the team for all your hard work. You have one big fan here

I have to admit that over the years my dentist and I have tried many different ways to eliminate the staining in my teeth. Ultimately I decided to give laser whitening a whirl, and I went in with no expectations so that I could avoid disappointment. Being that I have always been a little scared of the dentist, I was relieved when I met the person who would be taking care of me. She thoroughly explained the entire process helping me to become at ease with what was about to happen. After the procedure, I was amazed at the looks on everyone’s faces as it seemed to work. They finally handed me a mirror and I was finally convinced that I should have done this a long time ago. After all was said and done, I left with some parting gifts and a new smile. Both friends and family immediately noticed I had done something (without my saying so) and definitely reassured me that Bensonhurst Dental Care did a fantastic job. Thank you very much for the work and a special thank you to Valerie who pretty much held my hand through everything.
