Toothache Relief in Brooklyn, NY

Finding the cause of tooth pain and treating it the same day.

What Causes a Toothache?

A toothache is one of the most common reasons patients seek emergency dental care. The pain can range from a dull, persistent ache to sharp, throbbing pain that makes it difficult to eat, sleep, or concentrate. While occasional mild sensitivity may not require urgent attention, a toothache that is severe, worsening, or accompanied by swelling is a signal that something is wrong inside the tooth or surrounding tissues and needs professional evaluation.

When a Toothache Needs Urgent Care

A toothache is a symptom with many possible causes, from a cavity to a sinus infection. The character of the pain is a strong clue to what is happening inside the tooth.

  • Pain that lasts more than a day or two
  • Pain that wakes you at night
  • Pain with swelling, fever or a bad taste
  • Lingering pain after hot or cold
  • Pain when you bite

Toothache Relief at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, the dental team takes a systematic approach to diagnosing toothaches. The evaluation includes a clinical examination, digital imaging, and targeted testing to identify the source and cause of the pain. Toothaches can be caused by deep decay, a cracked tooth, an infected nerve, gum disease, or an abscess, and each cause requires a different treatment response. Accurate diagnosis is the critical first step in providing effective relief.

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. Call. We ask about the pain and arrange an appointment.
  2. Tests. Cold, tapping and bite tests locate the tooth.
  3. X-ray. Decay, infection or cracks are identified.
  4. Diagnosis. The cause is explained.
  5. Relief. Treatment to stop the pain is started at once.
  6. Follow-up. Definitive care is planned.

Treatment Matched to the Cause

Treatment is matched to the underlying cause. Decay is treated with a filling or crown depending on severity. An infected nerve may require root canal therapy to remove the compromised tissue and eliminate the pain. If an abscess is present, it is drained and treated to control the infection. In cases where the tooth cannot be saved, an emergency extraction may be necessary. The goal in every case is to identify the problem accurately, relieve the pain promptly, and set the patient on a path to definitive resolution.

Cost and Insurance

An emergency visit has two parts: the visit that stops the pain or infection, and the treatment that fixes the cause. You are told the fee for each before it is carried out.

What affects the cost

  • The examination and X-rays needed to find the cause
  • The treatment given at the emergency visit
  • The definitive treatment that follows, such as a root canal, crown or extraction
  • Medication, if prescribed

Most dental plans contribute to emergency examinations and to the treatment that follows. Our team can check your benefits and explain your options before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do for a toothache before I can get to the dentist?

Over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen can help manage discomfort temporarily. Rinsing with warm salt water may reduce inflammation. Avoid applying heat to the face and do not place aspirin directly on the gum. Contact the practice as soon as possible to schedule an evaluation.

When is a toothache considered an emergency?

A toothache should be treated as an emergency when the pain is severe, when it is accompanied by swelling, fever, or a foul taste in the mouth, when it disrupts sleep or daily function, or when it has been getting progressively worse. These signs may indicate an infection that needs prompt treatment.

Can a toothache go away on its own?

Sometimes pain subsides temporarily, but this does not mean the problem has resolved. In some cases, the nerve of the tooth dies, which eliminates pain but allows infection to continue spreading silently. A professional evaluation is always recommended to identify and treat the underlying cause.

What causes a toothache?

Common causes include deep cavities, cracked or fractured teeth, infected or inflamed pulp tissue, gum disease, and abscesses. Less frequently, sinus issues or referred pain from other areas can mimic a toothache. A thorough examination determines the true source.

Will I need a root canal for a toothache?

Not necessarily. Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve inside the tooth is infected or irreversibly inflamed. Toothaches caused by shallow decay, gum inflammation, or reversible sensitivity may be treatable with less involved procedures. The dental team determines the appropriate treatment based on the diagnosis.

As a new patient, they took me in for an emergency appointment same day with no issue. Did amazing work on my tooth. Will be back for a cleaning and will be a patient here going forward. Highly recommend Dr. Marina & entire staff. You will be treated like family!!

Fantastic care, from the moment I called right down to the very end of my treatment. Had to have an emergency root canal, and they were able to get me in right away. Everyone is so friendly and supportive and through it all my comfort was paramount. I would not see anyone other than Dr Alex. He is phenomenal. No soreness or pain during or after each part of the procedure. Shauna (you're awesome) was there talking me through every question I had, making sure I was at ease. I plan to come back for dental care in the future. Just be aware that health insurance isn't accepted here.
