Ceramic Inlays and Onlays in Brooklyn, NY

Lab-made ceramic restorations for teeth too damaged for a filling but not needing a crown.

What Are Ceramic Inlays and Onlays?

Ceramic inlays and onlays are precision-crafted restorations used to repair teeth with moderate to extensive decay or damage that exceeds what a standard filling can reliably restore. Sometimes referred to as indirect fillings, these restorations are fabricated in a dental laboratory from high-quality ceramic material and bonded into the tooth for a strong, long-lasting, and aesthetically superior result. An inlay fits within the cusps of the tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps to provide broader coverage.

When an Inlay or Onlay Is Recommended

Inlays and onlays sit between a filling and a crown. They replace only the damaged part of a back tooth, so more of your own enamel is kept than with a crown, and they are stronger than a large filling.

  • A large cavity in a back tooth
  • A big old filling that has cracked or worn out
  • A broken cusp with the rest of the tooth intact
  • A tooth that needs more strength than a filling can give
  • A preference to keep as much natural tooth as possible

Ceramic Inlays and Onlays at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, ceramic inlays and onlays are provided by Dr. Marina Rubinshtein as a conservative alternative to a full dental crown. When a tooth has too much damage for a composite filling but does not yet require the full coverage of a crown, an inlay or onlay preserves more of the healthy tooth structure while restoring strength and function. Dr. Marina’s expertise in both restorative and cosmetic dentistry ensures that every inlay and onlay is not only structurally sound but visually seamless.

What to Expect, Step by Step

The process typically requires two appointments. At the first visit, the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth is removed and the tooth is prepared. A precise impression is taken and sent to the laboratory, where the inlay or onlay is custom fabricated to match the exact dimensions and shade of the tooth. A temporary restoration is placed to protect the tooth in the interim. At the second visit, the final restoration is tried in, adjusted for fit and bite, and permanently bonded into place.

  1. Numbing and preparation. Decay and old filling material are removed and the tooth is shaped.
  2. Impression or scan. A precise record of the tooth is sent to the laboratory.
  3. Temporary. A temporary restoration protects the tooth for about two weeks.
  4. Try-in. The ceramic is checked for fit, contact and shade.
  5. Bonding. The restoration is bonded in place, the bite is adjusted and the surface is polished.

Recovery and Aftercare

After your visit

The first 24 hours

  • Avoid sticky or hard foods on the temporary
  • Chew on the other side where possible
  • Clean gently around the temporary and pull floss out sideways

The following days and weeks

  • Brush and floss the restoration like a natural tooth
  • Wear a nightguard if you grind
  • Keep regular exams so the bonded edges can be checked

When to Call Us

Call the office on (718) 234-3434 if you notice any of the following:

  • The temporary comes off or breaks
  • The tooth is painful to bite on after the final visit
  • You feel a rough edge or the floss catches

Why Choose Ceramic

Ceramic restorations offer exceptional durability, wear resistance, and biocompatibility. They do not expand or contract with temperature changes the way metal restorations can, and they maintain their color and polish over time. For patients who value both longevity and aesthetics in their dental care, ceramic inlays and onlays represent one of the finest options in modern restorative dentistry.

Cost and Insurance

The fee for restorative treatment depends on how much of the tooth needs rebuilding and on the material used. You receive a written estimate before treatment starts.

What affects the cost

  • The size and position of the tooth being restored
  • The material chosen, such as composite, ceramic or zirconia
  • Supporting procedures such as a core buildup, post or root canal
  • Laboratory fees for custom restorations

Most dental plans contribute to restorative care, often at different rates for fillings, crowns and bridges. Our team can check your benefits and explain your options before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an inlay and an onlay?

An inlay fits within the grooves and cusps of a tooth, similar to a filling but fabricated in a lab for greater precision and strength. An onlay is larger and extends over one or more of the cusps, providing more coverage for teeth with broader areas of damage. Both serve the same purpose of restoring the tooth without requiring a full crown.

How long do ceramic inlays and onlays last?

With proper care, ceramic inlays and onlays can last 15 years or longer. Their durability depends on the patient’s oral hygiene, diet, and whether they have habits like grinding that could affect the restoration. A nightguard may be recommended for patients who clench or grind.

Why would I need an inlay or onlay instead of a filling?

When the area of decay or damage is too large for a composite filling to restore reliably, an inlay or onlay provides the additional strength and coverage needed. It is a more conservative option than a crown because it preserves more of the natural tooth structure.

Is the procedure uncomfortable?

Local anesthesia ensures comfort during tooth preparation. The bonding appointment is typically quick and painless. Some patients may experience mild sensitivity to temperature for a short period after placement, which resolves on its own.

Are ceramic restorations noticeable?

No. Ceramic inlays and onlays are custom shade-matched to the surrounding tooth, making them virtually invisible. The material mimics the translucency and color of natural enamel, producing a result that blends seamlessly.

Dr. Marina and Dr. Alex first became our family dentists 35 years ago. Dr. Marina had to restore all my teeth, replacing metal crowns and lead filings back then. This time it was implants and zirconium crowns. And she did an absolutely amazing job again! Her attention to details, superb professional skills and strive to perfection makes her the best doctor I've ever seen. Each person in the staff was very professional, courteous and friendly, from the office coordinator Kevin, to receptionist Julia, dental assistants Julia and Anya. Because the round trip to the office for me now was six hours, they accommodated my schedule to cut the number of visits to the minimum. The best dental office you can find, thank you so much!
