Dental Sealants in Brooklyn, NY

A thin protective coating that seals the grooves of back teeth against decay.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are a thin, protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where decay is most likely to develop. The molars and premolars have natural grooves and pits that can trap food particles and bacteria, making them difficult to clean thoroughly with a toothbrush alone. Sealants fill these grooves to create a smooth, sealed surface that is far easier to keep clean and significantly less prone to decay.

Who Dental Sealants Are For

Sealants are most commonly recommended for children and adolescents as soon as their permanent molars come in, since the first few years after eruption are when teeth are most vulnerable to decay. However, adults who have deep grooves in their teeth or who are at higher risk for cavities can benefit from sealants as well. When paired with regular fluoride treatments and consistent routine cleanings, sealants provide an excellent additional layer of cavity prevention.

The chewing surfaces of molars have grooves too narrow for a toothbrush bristle to clean. Sealants fill those grooves so food and bacteria cannot settle in them.

  • Children whose first permanent molars have come in, around age 6
  • Children whose second molars have come in, around age 12
  • Teenagers and adults with deep grooves and no fillings in those teeth
  • Anyone with a high cavity risk
  • Patients with braces, who find back teeth harder to clean

Dental Sealants at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, sealant application is quick, painless, and non-invasive. The tooth surface is cleaned and lightly conditioned before the sealant material is painted onto the enamel and hardened with a curing light. The entire process takes just minutes per tooth, requires no drilling or anesthesia, and the sealant begins protecting the tooth immediately. Patients can eat and drink normally right after the appointment.

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. Cleaning. The tooth is cleaned and dried.
  2. Conditioning. A mild gel roughens the enamel for a few seconds so the sealant bonds.
  3. Rinse and dry. The tooth is rinsed and kept dry.
  4. Application. Sealant is painted into the grooves.
  5. Curing. A light hardens the sealant in seconds, and the bite is checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental sealants last?

Sealants can last several years with normal wear. They are checked at each routine dental visit and can be reapplied if they become worn or chipped over time.

Are sealants only for children?

While sealants are most commonly applied to children’s teeth, adults who are prone to decay or who have deep grooves in their molars can also benefit from sealant application. The dentist will recommend sealants based on individual risk.

Do sealants replace the need for brushing and flossing?

No. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, but brushing and flossing remain essential for cleaning all other tooth surfaces and maintaining overall gum health. Sealants are a supplement to good oral hygiene, not a replacement.

Is the sealant application process uncomfortable?

Not at all. The process is completely painless and does not require drilling or anesthesia. Most patients, including children, tolerate the application easily.

Can sealants be applied over existing cavities?

Sealants are designed for prevention and are applied to healthy teeth. If a cavity is already present, it needs to be treated before a sealant could be considered. In some cases, sealants can be placed over very early signs of enamel breakdown to prevent further progression, but this is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Some background: I am in my mid twenties and dealing with a crooked, crowded smile. My past experiences with straightening my smile resulted in crazy billing, miscommunications, and being sent to a million different offices. After some dedicated research I found the “one stop shop” I was looking for at Benson Hurst Dental. I began with a few phone call consultations with the friendly Shana that briefed my needs, wants, and overall goals. They made it clear from the beginning they will work urgently but it does come with a pretty large price tag. Nonetheless, my first visit involved a complete exam with each in-house professional, who preformed detailed xrays and took many photos for documentation. The first in office experience ended with Aurora going above and beyond to ensure my future appointments were set up on days that didn’t interfere with work, and created a payment plan that also fit my needs. Elisa preformed my cleaning the following appointment with my comfort as the first priority and the details of my teeth as a very close second. She went above and beyond to bring my teeth back to life and prepare me to maintain them accordingly. So far the process has been seamless and painless, and an overall pleasure working with the team. Thank you Benson Hurst Dental!
