Orthodontic Treatment for Adults

Orthodontic treatment is not just for adolescents. More adults than ever are pursuing alignment correction to improve their oral health, enhance their appearance, and address long-standing concerns they may have lived with for years. Whether motivated by cosmetic goals, functional issues such as bite problems and jaw discomfort, or the desire to simplify oral hygiene by eliminating crowding, adult orthodontics offers effective solutions at any age.

Why Adults Choose Orthodontic Treatment

The practice offers a full range of orthodontic systems suitable for adults, including Invisalign, clear aligners, ceramic braces, and lingual braces, all of which offer varying degrees of discretion during treatment. For adults looking to minimize treatment time, accelerated orthodontics can reduce the overall duration without compromising the quality of the outcome.

Teeth can be moved at any age as long as the gums and bone are healthy. Adult treatment differs mainly in planning: existing crowns, missing teeth and gum health all have to be taken into account.

  • Crowding that has worsened with age
  • Teeth that have shifted after braces in the teenage years
  • Spaces opening because of missing teeth or gum disease
  • Uneven wear from a poor bite
  • Alignment needed before implants, veneers or crowns

Adult Orthodontics at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, adult orthodontic treatment is provided by Dr. Marina Rubinshtein, who understands that adult patients often have different priorities and concerns than younger patients. Adults may have existing restorations, gum recession, or bone considerations that require a more nuanced treatment approach. Dr. Marina evaluates each patient’s dental history, current condition, and goals before recommending a plan that accounts for these factors while delivering a predictable, lasting result.

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. Comprehensive exam. Teeth, gums, existing restorations and bite are assessed.
  2. Gum health first. Any gum disease is treated before teeth are moved.
  3. Options. The appliances suited to your case and lifestyle are explained.
  4. Active treatment. Typically 6 to 24 months, depending on complexity.
  5. Restorative coordination. Planned crowns, veneers or implants are timed with tooth movement.
  6. Retention. Long-term retainers hold the result.

Orthodontics Before Other Dental Work

Adult orthodontics also plays an important role in preparing the mouth for other dental work. Aligning the teeth before cosmetic or restorative treatment can improve the final result and create a better foundation for crowns, veneers, implants, and other restorations. For many patients, orthodontics is the first step in a broader treatment plan that transforms the entire smile.

Cost and Insurance

Orthodontic fees are usually quoted as one amount for the whole course of treatment, including adjustments and the first set of retainers.

What affects the cost

  • The complexity of the tooth movement needed
  • The type of appliance chosen
  • The expected length of treatment
  • Retainers and any replacement aligners

Some dental plans include an orthodontic benefit with a lifetime maximum. Payment is often spread across the months of treatment. Our team can check your benefits and explain your options before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it too late for me to get orthodontic treatment?

No. Teeth can be moved at any age as long as the gums and bone are healthy. Adults in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond regularly undergo successful orthodontic treatment. Age is not a barrier to achieving a straighter, healthier smile.

What is the most discreet option for adult orthodontics?

Lingual braces are the most invisible fixed option, as they are placed behind the teeth. Invisalign and clear aligners are the most popular removable options, offering near-invisibility and the convenience of being taken out for meals and social situations.

Will orthodontic treatment interfere with my work or social life?

Modern orthodontic options are designed to minimize disruption. Clear aligners and lingual braces are virtually undetectable, and ceramic braces are far less noticeable than traditional metal brackets. Most adults find that treatment integrates easily into their daily routines.

How long does adult orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment time depends on the complexity of the case and the system chosen. Many adult cases are completed in 6 to 18 months. More complex cases may take longer. Dr. Marina provides a timeline estimate during the initial consultation.

Do I need to see a periodontist before starting orthodontics?

Adults with a history of gum disease or bone loss may benefit from a periodontal evaluation before beginning orthodontic treatment. At Bensonhurst Dental Care, Dr. Geoffrey Rubinshtein can assess periodontal health and, if needed, stabilize the gums before orthodontic forces are applied.

What Our Patients Say

Bensonhurst Dental has changed my life. I trusted them to not only do the work, but guarantee me lifetime happiness. Most places are just here to collect your money, with them it wasn’t about money, they actually wanted me to go the cheaper route and get braces, I declined because I went in knowing what I wanted. I got exactly what they said they would give me, exactly what they mocked up as a sample. & I couldn’t be anymore happier I am constantly smiling, constantly getting compliments. I keep up with my maintenance & I wear my retainers I am still in love 3 years later! I highly recommend this place. Ask for Dr Marina she will take care of you, as well as her sons and lonely staff! I’m sitting here thinking of where I was a month ago and I just can’t believe the difference in my teeth from when I first came in. I must say the hospitality and professionalism caught me by surprise, I wasn’t sure what I needed to make me smile, but after my 2 hour consultation there was no question or doubt in my mind Bensonhurst Dental was where I needed to be, they explained and showed me my treatment plan with before and after pictures that I was able to take home to show my family, they worked with my financial needs. I am still in treatment right now preparing to get my braces put on and I can’t be more happy to see the outcome. The office and staff are above and beyond my expectations and always have me in a great mood, I look forward to my dental visits for the first time in years which is crazy but I definitely would recommend this office to anyone.

Dr. Nik is super attentive and understanding. I am super nervous about starting my Invisalign process and had I gone to any other orthodontist they would have forced me to start the process without making any adjustments for my specific needs. Dr. Nik plans the process according to your actual lifestyle and needs. So happy to be moving forward with Bensonhurst Dental Care and Dr. Nik.
