Same-day diagnosis and relief for severe tooth pain.

What Is Emergency Tooth Pain Treatment?

Acute dental pain often signals a serious problem inside the tooth that requires immediate attention. Whether caused by a deep infection, an abscess, a cracked tooth, or a flare-up from a previously treated tooth, endodontic emergencies can produce severe, debilitating pain that disrupts daily life. Emergency pain treatment focuses on diagnosing the source of the pain, providing rapid relief, and stabilizing the tooth so that definitive treatment can follow.

When Tooth Pain Is an Emergency

Severe tooth pain usually means the pulp is inflamed or infected. The first visit is about finding the source and stopping the pain; definitive treatment may follow at a second visit.

  • Throbbing pain that wakes you at night
  • Pain that does not respond to over-the-counter medication
  • Swelling of the gum, face or jaw
  • Pain with fever or a bad taste
  • Severe pain when biting

Emergency Tooth Pain Treatment at Bensonhurst Dental Care

At Bensonhurst Dental Care, endodontic emergency pain treatment is provided by Dr. Alex Rubinshtein, who has the diagnostic skill and clinical experience to quickly identify the cause of acute dental pain and intervene effectively. The evaluation includes a clinical examination, digital imaging, and targeted testing to determine which tooth is affected and what is happening inside it. Once the source is identified, Dr. Alex takes immediate action, which may include opening the tooth to relieve pressure, draining an abscess, beginning root canal therapy, or prescribing medication to manage infection and pain.

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. Phone assessment. Our team asks about your symptoms and arranges the earliest appointment.
  2. Diagnosis. Tests and X-rays identify the tooth and the cause.
  3. Numbing. Local anesthesia relieves the pain.
  4. Relief. The pulp is removed, an abscess is drained or a bite is adjusted, as needed.
  5. Medication. Pain relief, and antibiotics where indicated, are prescribed.
  6. Next visit. An appointment is made to complete treatment.

What Happens After Emergency Treatment

Emergency pain treatment is not always a complete procedure in itself. In many cases, it is the critical first step that stabilizes the tooth and eliminates acute symptoms, with definitive treatment such as a full root canal or cracked tooth treatment completed at a subsequent appointment. The priority is always to get the patient out of pain as quickly as possible while laying the groundwork for a lasting solution.

Patients experiencing sudden, severe dental pain should not wait to seek care. Delaying treatment can allow infection to spread, increase the risk of tooth loss, and lead to complications that require more extensive intervention. For broader dental emergencies beyond endodontic concerns, Bensonhurst Dental Care’s emergency dentistry program provides prompt care for a wide range of urgent situations.

Cost and Insurance

The fee for root canal care depends mainly on which tooth is involved, because back teeth have more canals than front teeth. You receive an estimate before treatment starts.

What affects the cost

  • The tooth being treated: front tooth, premolar or molar
  • Whether it is a first treatment or a retreatment
  • The restoration needed afterward, usually a core and crown
  • 3D imaging, if required

Most dental plans contribute to root canal treatment and to the crown that follows. Our team can check your benefits and explain your options before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I have a dental emergency outside of office hours?

Contact Bensonhurst Dental Care as soon as possible. In the meantime, over-the-counter pain medication can help manage discomfort. Avoid applying heat to the area, and if swelling is present, a cold compress on the outside of the face can provide temporary relief.

How quickly can emergency pain treatment provide relief?

In most cases, significant relief is achieved during the emergency visit itself. Once the source of the pain is accessed and pressure is relieved or infection is drained, patients typically experience a substantial reduction in symptoms.

Will I need a follow-up appointment after emergency treatment?

Yes. Emergency treatment addresses the immediate pain and stabilizes the tooth, but definitive treatment such as completing the root canal and placing a crown is needed at a subsequent appointment to fully resolve the issue and restore the tooth.

Is emergency pain treatment the same as a root canal?

Not always. Emergency treatment may involve beginning a root canal, but in some cases it focuses solely on relieving pain and controlling infection so that the full root canal can be completed under optimal conditions at the next visit.

What causes sudden, severe tooth pain?

The most common causes include deep infection of the dental pulp, abscess formation, a crack that has exposed the nerve, or a flare-up from a previously treated tooth. Each of these situations requires professional diagnosis and treatment to resolve.

Been going here for like the past 20 years, always very professional and friendly. Very flexible with appointments and emergencies, wouldn’t go anywhere else.

Fantastic care, from the moment I called right down to the very end of my treatment. Had to have an emergency root canal, and they were able to get me in right away. Everyone is so friendly and supportive and through it all my comfort was paramount. I would not see anyone other than Dr Alex. He is phenomenal. No soreness or pain during or after each part of the procedure. Shauna (you're awesome) was there talking me through every question I had, making sure I was at ease. I plan to come back for dental care in the future. Just be aware that health insurance isn't accepted here.
